AJCommittee Urges United Nations To Stay Out Of Current Israeli-Palestinian Debate

Wednesday, 12 March 1997

The American Jewish Committee today urged the United Nation's General Assembly not to debate Israel's decision to build housing in the Har Homa neighborhood of Jerusalem.

The General Assembly, the AJC contended, is the wrong forum to debate the peace process. Intervention now by the U.N. General Assembly will not help the process and, in fact, may be harmful to the negotiations. Israelis and Palestinians have a framework for negotiations and must work together as partners for peace within that framework and within the guidelines which have been agreed upon. Any United Nations involvement at this juncture can only add to a climate of mistrust and resentment rather than one of cooperation and direct negotiations and frequent contacts that are so desperately needed to keep the peace process on track.
