NCADD President Answers Questions in Online Chat

Stacia Murphy, President of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. yesterday participated in a USAToday online web chat featuring the topic "Dealing with Alcoholism." Ms. Murphy answered about ten general questions about alcoholism and alcohol use in America. The transcript is available on the USAToday website.

"The participants were courageous in bringing their personal issues before a national audience," declared Ms. Murphy. "They asked thoughtful questions that are relevant to most Americans. Some of the inquiries gave me the opportunity to dispel some of the myths about alcoholism, recovery, and drinking. I am grateful for this opportunity."

USAToday states," Alcoholism is all too common in the USA: About 43% of adult Americans — 76 million people — have been exposed to alcoholism in their families. Despite this, alcoholism frequently is still considered a moral failing rather than a disease," as they highlight this important health issue. Ms. Murphy has worked in the field of alcoholism and other drug addictions for nearly 25 years as an educator and administrator. From 1990 until 1997, Ms. Murphy served as the executive director of NCADD's New York City affiliate. She is the first affiliate executive director ever to lead the national organization.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. fights the stigma and the disease of alcoholism and other drug addictions.
