Philip Ardery Receives Peterson Award from NARSAD Recognized for Extraordinary Vision, Outstanding Leadership in Mental Health Field

(Great Neck, NY. August 7, 2001). The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) has presented the Peterson Award for outstanding leadership in mental health research to Philip Ardery of Louisville, Kentucky.

Throughout his career, Mr. Ardery has demonstrated visionary leadership, uncommon courage and exceptional organizational skills that have enabled him to excel in numerous professional and philanthropic activities.

He played a pivotal role in establishing the American Schizophrenia Foundation in 1981, where he led the effort to increase public understanding of this illness and obtain funding for research. Later, he spearheaded the establishment of NARSAD, the leading donor-supported organization funding psychiatric research worldwide. NARSAD was incorporated in 1986.

Mr. Ardery distinguished himself as a leader -- and hero -- as far back as in World War II. As a young bomber pilot in the U.S. Air Force, he often flew the most critical and challenging missions. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Flying Cross on two occasions, the Air Medal four times, and the French Croix de Guerre. He remained a leader in the military, retiring as a brigadier general after heading the Kentucky Air National Guard and having served in the Pentagon.

Mr. Ardery was a principal partner in the eminent law firm of Brown, Todd and Hayburn in Louisville. While practicing law, he engaged in numerous philanthropic activities. He served as president of the Kentucky Heart Association and went on to become chairman of the board of the American Heart Association. He was also a founder of Wellspring, a community residential facility for the mentally ill. Mr. Ardery brought the experience and skills he acquired in his philanthropic endeavors to the development of NARSAD. He served on NARSAD's board of directors and as the organization's principal legal consultant and adviser.
